Global semiconductor sales rose 6.5 percent last year and recovered strongly in the fourth quarter = SIA

Time:2021-02-09Department:

Global semiconductor sales in 2020 rose 6.5 percent from 2019 to $439 billion, according to data from the Semiconductor Industry Association of America (SIA) on February 1. The strong recovery in the fourth quarter offset a sharp decline in March and April.
U.S. chipmakers had a sales of $208 billion, which is about 47 percent of total global sales.
Much of the growth in U.S. purchases has been driven by high-performance memory chips used in applications such as data centers, according to the head of the SIA.
US high-tech companies such as Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet's Google saw their cloud computing businesses surge last year due to an increase in telecommuting.
Although companies in the United States accounted for about half of global semiconductor sales last year, the share of global chip production in the U.S. has declined from 37% in 1990 to 12% today. That's because most American companies outsource production to factories in Asia.
